Tin Hau Festival: Honouring a Sea Deity

Why We Recommend it

Tin Hau Festival honours the sea deity with temple rituals, Cantonese opera, parades and bamboo-framed community celebrations.

Description

This year’s Tin Hau Festival marks the birthday of the sea deity Tin Hau, bringing together temples, communities and clans in a tradition rooted in the city’s maritime history. Held on the 23rd day of the third lunar month (which falls on 9 May this year), the festival includes worship ceremonies, Cantonese opera performances in honour of Tin Hau and the exchange of fa pau, the paper floral tributes used in the celebration. Some local organisations like Tin Hau Tsing Yi Tin Hau Temple Management Committee also organise parades on land or along waterways, adding movement and communal energy to the ritual calendar.

Across Hong Kong, celebrations take place at Tin Hau temples and in districts such as Sai Kung, Yuen Long and Tsing Yi, with local observances often framed by bamboo structures. These temporary installations help define festival spaces for offerings, performances and gathering, giving each location its own unique character while keeping the tradition alive.
