Tobe Kan: Reframing the Everyday

Why We Recommend it

Tobe Kan’s solo show Good Afternoon, Good Evening, Good Night explores time, home and perception through paintings, objects, and plant imagery.

Description

At Gallery Exit, Tobe Kan’s solo exhibition Good Afternoon, Good Evening, Good Night unfolds through paintings and ready-made objects that reflect on repetition, memory and the instability of everyday time. Borrowing its title from 1998 film The Truman Show, the exhibition moves between artificial and domestic spaces, using plant imagery, altered daylight tones and unconventional supports such as arched canvases, antiques and second-hand furnishings. These works, like “A Rest 29” resist documentary precision and instead drift toward memory scenes shaped by distance, emotion and ambiguity.

Living and working in Hong Kong, Kan obtained a bachelor of fine arts degree from the RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School in 2017. Working across painting, drawing and installation, her practice explores liminality, impermanence, identity and the quiet instability of being between states — sleep and wakefulness, reality and dream, presence and absence. She has exhibited locally in Hong Kong and abroad — including Dallas, Taipei, Seoul and Cambridge.
