Description
Blue Lotus Gallery’s Torii is an evocative exhibition and photobook by Hong Kong-based Canadian photographer Ulana Switucha. Over a decade, Switucha travelled through Japan’s remote landscapes to capture the serene beauty of torii gates – sacred thresholds marking the passage from the secular to the divine. Through minimalist compositions, soft natural light and long exposures, her images distill these iconic structures into quiet sentinels that invite contemplation on the delicate harmony between humanity, nature and the spiritual world.
Switucha brings over 30 years of Asian photography experience to this deeply personal project, which has garnered international acclaim. A former Japan resident, her intimate knowledge of the country’s sacred gates shines through in her nuanced, award-winning work, recognised by the Sony World Photography Awards and the Prix de la Photographie, Paris. Her photographs have been exhibited in places like Hong Kong, Japan, Canada and the United States.
There will be a private preview on 13 November, from 18:00 to 20:00 at Blue Lotus.
