Toyohuku Ryo’s Hong Kong

Why We Recommend it
Toyofuku Ryo’s golden installations blend local elements with his perspective on Hong Kong, encouraging visitors to gain new insights into daily life in the city.
Description
Oi! Spotlight: The Golden Realm, the first solo exhibition of Japanese contemporary artist Toyofuku Ryo, can be viewed at Oi! Glassie. The exhibition features two large-scale installations that present a traveller’s view of Hong Kong.
The Golden Tearoom showcases 213 drawings of Hong Kong elements, surrounded by a Japanese karesansui-style white sand garden. This tranquil space invites reflection on the city through Ryo’s eyes and creates the impression of a floating island amidst everyday life.
In contrast, the Golden Playroom, a vibrant installation adorned with Hong Kong-based decorations, fabrics, and art, reflects Toyofuku’s unique style by integrating local historical elements and cultural characteristics with his experiences as a traveller to Hong Kong. Visitors can play electronic and board games that are familiar to both Japanese and local audiences.
Ryo aims for his art to encourage visitors to carry new insights into their daily lives as they leave the exhibition. By simply shifting one’s perspectives and viewpoints, he hopes that even the most trivial things can be seen in a new light and approached differently.
