Two Matters: CCDC’s Season-opening Double Bill

Why We Recommend it
Through Two Matters, City Contemporary Dance Company opens a new season with a double bill inviting us to ponder motion and consciousness.
Description
Tibetan choreographer Sang Jijia began his first full season at the helm of City Contemporary Dance Company with a pledge to bring an “international mindset and ambition” to Hong Kong’s leading modern dance outfit. One year later this goal still appears in mind at the outset of the 2026/27 season, which opens with a two-part programme balancing the local with the global, as it reflects on thought, form and movement. A classic double bill, the Two Matters programme is pointedly named for its cross-cultural interaction, pairing pieces by Taiwan-based choreographer Chen Wu-kang and United Kingdom-based Bruce Wong.
In his Restory, Chen employs classic Cantopop tunes by Sandra Lang and Maria Cordero to spark chimes of recognition and movement within the audience, contrasting moments of motion and rest to provoke meditation on our own physicality. By contrast, Wong’s Nowhere to Land leads us to the realm of thoughts — rising and vanishing mid-air, in a state that is “formless, imageless, colourless, and always in flux” — reflecting the fragmented nature of consciousness.
On 29 and 30 May, there will be performances at 20:00. On 31 May, meanwhile, the show will be held at 15:00.
