Un Cheng’s Autobiographical Bedroom Paintings

Why We Recommend it

Blindspot Gallery presents the fourth solo exhibition of Hong Kong artist Un Cheng, featuring her first monograph, Now, and Then?, encompassing her creations from 2017 to the present.

Description

Marking her fourth solo exhibition at Blindspot Gallery, Un Cheng: Bedroom Paintings showcases the Hong Kong artist’s latest body of work alongside the launch of her first monograph, Now, and Then?, encompassing her creations from 2017 to the present.

The exhibition centres on the concept of “bedroom painting,” a term coined by Cheng that highlights the intimacy of vignettes where she reveals her introspective observations on the surroundings within her studio, domestic space and the world beyond.

Highlights include “Drunk Dawn, Keys Gone” (2025), which offers a view through a barred gate into the artist’s flat, dividing the interior into fragmented planes resembling cathedral stained glass, while Cheng projects herself into the scene as if gazing back at her own present predicament. “What did I puke? No clue” (2025) presents a hallucinatory blue dreamscape, reminiscent of Marc Chagall’s spiritual landscapes, depicting a bathtub with swirling water, as if purging the body of impurities.
