Undercover Heroes and Hong Kong Cinema at Tai Kwun

Why We Recommend it
Black and white define the visual and moral heart of Hong Kong cinema, where undercover heroes move between light and shadow, caught in the struggle between justice and survival.
Description
Undercover Underworld at Tai Kwun explores the enduring appeal of undercover agents in Hong Kong cinema, tracing how these complex figures embody both the ambiguity of their roles and the city itself. Spanning eight iconic films — from Man on the Brink and City on Fire to Infernal Affairs and The White Storm — the exhibition considers how undercover stories unfold in the space between good and evil, shadow and light. These protagonists, living at the edge, exemplify Hong Kong cinema’s energy and its fascination with duality and risk.
Curated by Sunny Chan and Kristof Van den Troost, the show recreates memorable scenes through interactive installations, original manuscripts and artefacts on loan from acclaimed filmmakers. Visitors can encounter awards, trophies, and behind-the-scenes details. There are also interviews with directors like Tsui Hark, Alan Mak and Alex Cheung; actors including Louis Koo and Philip Chan; music composers and real undercover officers, all illuminating the thin line between film and reality.
Set in the historic grounds of Tai Kwun, the exhibition brings cinematic myth and lived experience together in a fitting tribute to Hong Kong’s undercover heroes.
