Why We Recommend it

Five leading Czech artists spent 10 weeks in Hong Kong creating fresh work in a space shared with local creatives — and this is the result.

Description

Five leading Czech artists were invited to Hong Kong to create new works alongside a cohort of the city’s top creatives. The result of this cross-cultural encounter is Undercurrents, a group exhibition of 40 works from the programmes 11 participants – co-curated by Petr Hájek, the visiting founder and artistic director of Prague’s Chemistry Gallery, and locally based independent curator Joyce Wong.

Since May, WestK’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence (AIR) programme has hosted illustrator Michal Bačák, sculptor Nikola Emma Ryšavá, goldsmith/jewellery designer Zdeněk Vacek, and painters Patrik Kriššák and Markéta Kolářová – most of whom are exhibiting in Hong Kong for the first time. For 10 weeks they shared creative space with local contemporary ink artist Hung Fai, sculptor Rivian Cheung, new media artist Vvzela Kook, painter Mari Liew, neon light artist and Zolima collaborator Jive Lau, and architect, sculptor and media artist Tobias Klein.

The site of the residency and exhibition is Ma Wan 1868: a brightly coloured, year-old tourist destination on the site of a former village, in the style of Busan’s Insta-famous Gamcheon Culture Village, next to the Park Island private housing estate. Through a mix of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture and multimedia, Undercurrents‘ resulting works take inspiration from Ma Wan Island’s position as a tranquil escape, buffered by waterways at the edges of a bustling metropolis — reflecting on the fractured relations between man and nature, urban modernity and ecological preservation.

Zolima is offering 20 readers the opportunity to join an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the exhibition, as well as the chance to meet the artists in the neighbouring studios. Sign up for the free tour now.
