Urban Daydreaming: Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec’s Utopian Cities

Why We Recommend it

The internationally sought-after industrial designers explore how urban environments could be improved in an immersive, imaginative and thought-provoking exhibition at the Hong Kong Design Institute.

Description

In Urban Daydreaming, the Bouroullec brothers invite visitors to dream along with them about what cities worldwide could become. Imagine a city with portable warm shelters for protection where people can huddle around public fireplaces, hanging forests or suspended waterfalls…

Consisting of 14 detailed proposals, the exhibition explores different ways to incorporate nature—greenery, animals, water and fire—into urban spaces. This marks the first time the brothers have worked on an urban development project.

Three of these proposals are no longer just a dream: ‘Cloud’, a shelter with a floating garden inspired by pergolas; ‘Kiosk’, a multi-purpose intermediate public space; multifunctional ‘Platforms’ and ‘Stream’, a corridor of water and plants, have been brought to life in cities in the USA, France and Germany respectively.
