Hayaki Nishigaki Explores Hong Kong’s Contrasts

Why We Recommend it
Hayaki Nishigaki’s solo exhibition at Wamono art showcases his unique blend of traditional Japanese techniques and modern themes including new works inspired by Hong Kong’s contrasts.
Description
Playful Scramble in Dragon’s Lair is Hayaki Nishigaki’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, held at wamono art. This captivating show features new works from the Japanese artist’s representative series, such as Rakuchu Rakugai-zu (A Day), Hyakkiyako (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) and Enso (Circle).
Inspired by Hong Kong’s dramatic landscape, Nishigaki reinterprets traditional Rakuchu Rakugai-zu paintings — scenic views of former capital city Kyoto and its suburbs — through a modern lens. His new works, created after experiencing the city’s bird’s-eye view from the Peak, blend golden clouds and townscapes with contemporary themes. By juxtaposing Hong Kong’s auspicious lands, where feng shui principles meet modern technology, Nishigaki highlights the city’s contrasts: its rich history alongside rapid economic growth, and the layers of time and culture that coexist.
