A Dance Tribute to Zulu Creativity

Why We Recommend it

Award-winning choreographer Robyn Orlin’s dance piece celebrates South African Zulu rickshaw drivers, transforming their dynamic street culture into a powerful stage spectacle.

Description

Part of this year’s Asia+ Festival, We wear our wheels with pride bursts onto the stage as a spirited ode to life and resilience. Created by award-winning choreographer Robyn Orlin, this electrifying work honours the Zulu rickshaw drivers of South Africa. These drivers elevated their daily grind into vivid performance art – decked out in feathered headdresses, cow horns and tunics adorned with pearls and fringes.

Orlin channels this energy through Moving Into Dance Mophatong, South Africa’s premier contemporary company rooted in Zulu heritage. The performance fuses tribal motifs and urban style, with lively visuals reflecting the Rainbow Nation’s spirit, displayed on giant screens. A bold soundtrack merges Khoisan chants, slam poetry, electronic beats, hip hop and Afrofusion, crafting a rich sensory experience that electrifies the stage with cultural pride and energy.

The performance will be held on 18 October at 20:00 and 19 October at 15:00.
