Inside Shigeo Otake’s Otherworldly Realm of Creatures

Why We Recommend it
Painter Shigeo Otake’s Agoraphilia stages dense, Renaissance-inspired scenes linking fungal life, marketplaces and social exchange.
Description
Shigeo Otake’s Agoraphilia is the Japanese painter’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, featuring new fresco and tempera paintings shaped by over four decades of practice. Drawing on Italian early Renaissance techniques, Otake constructs intricate, densely populated scenes where anthropomorphic figures and botanical forms converge. His long-standing fascination with mycology, particularly the parasitic transformations of Cordyceps, informs a visual language that blurs boundaries between organism and environment.
Anchored by the concept of the agora as a site of assembly, the exhibition at White Cube reflects on circulation, reciprocity and the rhythms of collective life. Through compositions like “The Magnate” and “Crossroads,” Otake examines how everyday interactions are structured by exchange, accumulation and movement. The result is a body of work that connects organic growth with social systems, offering a layered meditation on coexistence, consumption and the shared spaces that shape human and non-human activity.
