With Love from Hong Kong: A Soap Opera Tribute

Why We Recommend it

Adrian Wong’s With Love from Hong Kong, featuring soap opera re-imaginings of his grandmother’s history, takes visitors on a nostalgic journey to the 1980s. A special public programme, where visitors can create their own soap opera, will take place on 24 May.

Description

Artist Adrian Wong presents With Love from Hong Kong, featuring two short videos and meticulously crafted sets inspired by his grandmother’s passion for soap operas. This exhibition reproduces family narratives through the sensationalism and prosaicism that are hallmarks of the genre.

Wong masterfully integrates elements of pulp television and cinematic tropes with his familial heritage, transforming his grandmother’s life into dramatic vignettes that reflect and reverse her habit of intertwining soap operas with her daily experiences. Her life stories are reimagined in two videos, produced by a dedicated team of scriptwriters, production crew, and seasoned actors experienced in Hong Kong television drama.

A special public programme, “How to Make a Soap Opera,” will be held on May 24, 2025. This programme will teach participants the basics of screenwriting and directing for television. Participants will collaborate to create a short treatment, develop characters through costumes, hair and makeup, and film their own soap opera episode on-site.
