Greg Girard’s Photographic Odes to HK and Tokyo

Why We Recommend it

Greg Girard’s HKG–TYO 1974–2023 traces Hong Kong and Tokyo’s transformation through atmospheric photographs from the 1970s to today.

Description

Greg Girard’s HKG–TYO 1974–2023 explores the parallel evolution of Hong Kong and Tokyo through atmospheric photographs spanning nearly five decades. Drawn to overlooked corners of urban life, Girard captures the vulnerability, grit and wonder of two cities undergoing profound transformation during their post‑industrial boom years.

The exhibition moves between neon-lit Tokyo streets and the dense urban fabric of Hong Kong. Images of Shibuya and Shinjuku glow with layered signage and rain‑slicked pavements, while scenes from Hong Kong recall its dramatic skyline and dense neighborhoods. Highlights include Girard’s iconic documentation of Kowloon Walled City and cinematic moments such as a Cathay Pacific jet skimming above the city against Lion Rock.

Born in 1955, Girard began his career in the 1970s and spent over 30 years exploring Asian metropolises such as Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong, capturing their social and physical transformations. Celebrated for his archival records of life in the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City, his work is held in leading collections such as M+, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.

An opening reception will take place on 21 March from 16:00 to 20:00. Visitors can also meet the artist on 21 March from 18:00 to 19:00 and on 24 March between 19:00 and 20:00.
