Wong Tai Sin’s Birthday: Celebrating the Deity

Why We Recommend it

Wong Tai Sin’s birthday lands on 14 October this year. Each year, worshippers from Hong Kong and beyond join the ceremony to watch the rituals and seek blessings.

Description

The deity Wong Tai Sin celebrates his birthday on the 23rd day of the eighth Chinese lunar month, which falls on 14 October. Worshippers from Hong Kong and China are preparing to join the festivities, make offerings and receive blessings.

Led by a High Priest, there will be a series of acts, including presenting joss sticks (上香 soeng5 hoeng1), conducting the ritual of Three Kneelings and Nine Kowtows (三跪九叩 saam1 gwai6 gau2 kau3), chanting mantras and reading scriptures and more. Outside of the main temple hall, the staff sounds the bells and drums 24 times and members of the temple sing praises. The whole ceremony lasts about one to two hours.

Though many Hongkongers worship Wong Tai Sin, the deity is relatively new to the city, having been introduced to the people in 1915.
