Why We Recommend it

Local artist Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai debuts her solo exhibition in Hong Kong, A Wrinkle In Time, at Alisan Fine Arts, showcasing four distinct series that reimagine ink art through contemporary perspectives.

Description

A Wrinkle In Time at Alisan Fine Arts marks the solo debut of Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai, featuring 15 works from her four series that transform classical techniques into dynamic dialogues with contemporary life.

Gathering of Ten Fragrances features ten paintings of local plants and flowers, inviting audiences to explore the city’s culture and scents. Transcending Boundaries reimagines childhood games as lively cultural landscapes, blending Japanese ukiyo-e aesthetics with Chinese gongbi painting. Ballad of the Seasons draws from Yuan Dynasty texts, examining the 24 solar terms alongside contemporary urban scenes. Mutual Reflections pairs antiquities with modern objects to create a dialogue between past and present.

Cheuk has been featured in numerous art exchange programmes in China and South Korea and has received multiple awards. Her works are held in the collections of Hong Kong Museum of Art and numerous private collections.

On 23 August, there will be a talk held in tandem with Cheuk’s exhibition. Featuring artists Cheuk and William Shieh and moderated by Peggy Ho, research fellow at the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, this insightful conversation will focus on contemporary gongbi painting.
