Wu Shan’s Past Decade of Lacquer and Ink Paintings On Display

Why We Recommend it

gdm’s newest exhibition explores Wu Shan’s lacquer and ink works, where a delicate and rigorous use of fine lines invites introspection.

Description

gdm (Galerie du Monde) is currently showing lacquer and ink paintings by Wu Shan, one of the leading figures in Chinese contemporary lacquer art. Spanning over a decade from 2012 and 2025, the exhibits record the development of Wu’s visual language, a delicate and rigorous use of fine lines. From his earlier works influenced by cubism to his more recent quiet and minimalist explorations, there is always an undercurrent of pure power provoking introspection.

Wu first studied oil painting at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Art), then graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in 1986. His works have been exhibited across Asia and North America, including in the National Art Museum of China, Beijing.
