The Xi Xi Space: Imagining Life in Miniature and Teddy Bears

Why We Recommend it

The Xi Xi Space’s inaugural show celebrates the late prominent writer’s imaginative spirit through her room boxes and handmade bears.

Description

The Xi Xi Space’s inaugural exhibition commemorates the third anniversary since award-winning writer Xi Xi’s passing (1937–2022) and contributions to Chinese literature. Located in Wan Chai’s Foo Tak Building, Xi Xi’s Room Boxes: Beginning with Teddy Bears is a poetic exploration of creation, memory and resilience that bridges everyday life and artistic inquiry.

Curated by author and Zolima CityMag contributor Eva Wong and curator Louise Law, the exhibition features two core themes: “Home Living Room,” which reconstructs Xi’s To Kwa Wan living room and furniture layout that reflected her daily life. Meanwhile, “Handmade Bears” showcases her bear-making works, tools and materials — revealing how miniature worlds and tactile craft shaped her literary vision. Through these intimate settings, step into the writer’s creative universe where ordinary objects come alive with tenderness and meaning.

A leading figure in post-war Chinese literature, Xi infused Hong Kong’s literary scene with curiosity and empathy. She published over 50 works across various genres and forms, such as My City and The Bear Chronicles, merging meticulous observation with profound humanism, inspiring generations to see the extraordinary in the everyday.

During the exhibition period, the Xi Xi Foundation will offer guided school tours, four literary discussion and book club sessions (on 15 and 30 November and 20 December) featuring prominent writers and translators. The foundation will also publish a bilingual chronicle of the writer compiled by her longtime friend Ho Fok-yan.

The exhibition is free. To visit, online pre-registration is required on a first-come, first-served basis. For activities-related enquiries, contact info@xixifoundation.org.hk.
