Description
Stephanie Mei Huang’s independent video work programme yellow porcelain ii (outside the Los Angeles Police Academy) is featured at de Sarthe’s new media room alongside the gallery’s contemporary photography exhibition. Blending film, performance, sculpture and ritual, the work explores ideas of self-protection through 16mm film and clay. It is part of Huang’s self-armature series, which combines films from and outside the Los Angeles Police Academy with different types of clay.
For “yellow porcelain ii,” Huang uses 10 kilograms of porcelain — a fragile material with a long history of cultural exchange between East and West. Through clay armour and the camera lens, the work examines surveillance, violence and the question of whether self-protection and personal autonomy are still possible in an age of mass surveillance and state power.
