Why We Recommend it
Yukari Nishi’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong presents a surreal world, illustrating care in the domestic sphere, its hardships and endurance.
Description
Drawing the audience into a surreal world, WKM Gallery presents In the meantime, Japanese painter Yukari Nishi’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Nishi explores ideas about family and caretaking, showcasing uncanny characters in odd scenarios bearing resemblance to stereotypical imaginations of mid-20th century American home life. With no emotive expressions, the humanlike figures appear unphased by the situations of comfort and anxiety, and the tension in between.
Born and raised in Japan, Nishi has been exhibiting her works in the country and abroad since 2004. Her works explore meaning and sense of self in an increasingly individualistic society, also reflecting on the foreign and manufactured Western nostalgia in the post-war Japanese consciousness.
