Zhao Hai Tien: 50 Years of Painting

Why We Recommend it
Journey through five decades of Zhao Hai Tien’s abstract and spiritual painting in The University of Hong Kong University Museum and Art Gallery’s landmark retrospective, Zhao Hai Tien — Cultivation: 50 Years of Painting.
Description
Zhao Hai Tien — Cultivation: 50 Years of Painting offers an immersive exploration of the artist’s lifelong pursuit of abstraction as a form of spiritual and cultural dialogue. The exhibition traces her evolving visual language — from the expressive energy of her early New York abstractions to the contemplative, calligraphic compositions of her later years — revealing a painterly journey rooted in meditation, vitality and transcendence.
Born in Shanghai in 1945 and educated in Shanghai, Hong Kong and New York, Zhao was among the few Chinese artists of her generation to train overseas, joining Cooper Union’s lively art scene in the late 1960s. Her pioneering cross-cultural vision and devotion to painting continue to inspire, embodying five decades of resilience, reflection and a boundless dialogue between Eastern tradition and Western modernity.
From now until 1 March 2026, there will be guided tours in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. For those in English, the next ones will be held on 15 January and 28 February 2026. They are free and require pre-registration.
