Co-author Billy Potts will be talking with some of Hong Kong’s leading experts in design and brand identity on how Henry Steiner’s work has contributed to Hong Kong’s own branding and graphic visual legacy over the last 60 years. Join our second talk at Eslite Bookstore Causeway Bay with collector and designer John Wu.

Get to see and hear stories about some of the many objects that are featured in the book that were graciously lended by John Wu. John has collected more than 100,000 Hong Kong artefacts like vintage maps, photographs, postcards, banknotes, toys, name cards, stamps and all manner of ephemera relating to the city.

Billy Potts is a Hong Kong-born writer and designer. His writing for Zolima CityMag explores the city’s hidden stories and design heritage, including traditional crafts, calligraphy and more. Potts’ in-depth design and research study on defunct and abandoned signage, Hong Kong Ghost Signs, has been backed by both the Design Trust and Lord Wilson Heritage Trust. Through his design studio Handsome Co., Potts has worked on projects involving Hong Kong’s iconic trams, the classic Camel flask and other renowned local brands including Cathay Pacific, Ascot Chang and more.

John Wu is the founder of the Hong Kong graphic studio MODERNISM limited. As a collector and graphic designer Wu has constructed a timeline of Hong Kong’s evolution through the lens of graphic design thanks to his collection of more than 100,000 design objects made of Hong Kong artefacts like vintage maps, photographs, postcards, banknotes, toys, name cards, stamps and all manner of ephemera relating to the city.

His collection is housed within the Hong Kong Graphic Archive at the Hong Kong Design Institute and comprises works by anonymous and renowned designers such as Henry Steiner, Kan Tai Keung, Alan Chan and Arthur Hacker. Through his ongoing work with The Mills, HKDI, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Alan Chan, Stanley Wong, K11, and CCIDAHK, Wu is digitizing his collection to turn it into a valuable and exceptional design research resource that illuminates the origins of modern Hong Kong.
