Join our talk and workshops in November!
Zolima Live is back! Our first edition was even more successful than we had hoped, offering hands-on workshops and guided tours that gave participants an immersive understanding of Hong Kong’s neon heritage. Now we’re ready to launch our second experimental edition: the Dragon and Papercraft Experience.
Zolima Live goes beyond words and images, offering exclusive, in-depth and live experiences – exploring the hidden, forgotten, unknown depths of Hong Kong’s unique identity. We’re partnering with the city’s most influential organisations, artists and cultural guardians to bring these experiences to life.
You might have read our stories about Hong Kong’s mythical creatures and in particular the enormous paper dragons that are painstakingly handmade by local craftspeople. Many of them have ended up overseas, like the family of dragons that call Bendigo home, a testament to the Australian city’s history as a destination for Chinese gold miners.
These dragons are part of Hong Kong’s rich papercraft heritage. For generations, master craftspeople have used bamboo strips, paper, fabric and paint to make all kinds of paper objects. From lions and dragons for celebratory occasions, to Ghost Kings and offerings for rituals, papercraft technique plays a significant role in Hong Kong tradition. It’s a skill that embodies Hong Kong’s local history, culture, and religion. At the peak of the paper craft industry in the 1950s and 60s, Hong Kong was one of the major exporters of papercraft products to Chinese diaspora communities in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States.
Now’s your chance to learn more about this vital part of Hong Kong heritage. Three workshops will be led by master Hui-Ka-hung, one of the few remaining papercraft masters and Zolima CityMag contributor Billy Potts, who has spent years researching the dragons. Billy will share the fascinating story of the Bendigo dragons. Master Hui who created the world longest parading dragon of 125m long will take you inside his workshop to tell you the history, stories and techniques behind the art of papercraft.
Take a glimpse at the story of how Hui’s workshop made the longest parading dragon for Australia

Here’s what to expect
Behind the Scenes talk: Master Hui – together with Billy – will take you inside his workshop for one hour to show you lion heads and flower cannons, and possibly along with newly commissioned works that haven’t been shown yet, and tell you their stories. You will also hear the story of how Hui’s workshop recently made the longest parading dragon ever seen – 125 metres in length – following ancestral traditions from the Chinese imperial period.
Workshop: We’re offering three different types of experiences at Master Hui’s workshop. There’s a family-friendly half-day workshop for adults and children who will learn how to make a starfruit lantern. Another half-day workshop for adults will offer the same experience. Finally, a full-day workshop for adults will let you make your own more intricate traditional lantern.
All workshops will be led by Master Hui and his assistants, with an introduction by Billy Potts. They are purposely small, with between six to 15 people, with no more than six participants per master to ensure you will all benefit from their teaching and guidance.
Why you should join: Papercraft and dragons are an interrelated but overlooked part of Hong Kong’s heritage. This is a rare opportunity to learn from a master who has spent his life perfecting papercraft, as well as a chance to hear Billy Potts share the stories about dragon craft that he has learnt through years of research and reporting.
Enjoy our special perk of 10% off on any combination of a minimum of any 2 sessions.
