Inside Eric Lai’s Tranquil State at Gallery 3812

Why We Recommend it
Contemporary artist Eric Lai Wai-lam’s first Hong Kong solo exhibition invites visitors into his world of “Tranquil State” to search for peace and enjoyment.
Description
Tranquil State brings together three years of contemporary artist Eric Lai Wai-lam’s work across different series, media and scales, exploring everyday objects and the meanings they carry over time.
Two of his major pieces, “11:11” and “22:22,” are inspired by Cantonese songs written by renowned lyricist Wyman Wong, both conveying a sense of loneliness and of being misunderstood by the world. Resonating with the songs, Lai takes symbols from their lyrics, such as fawns and rockets, and combines them with personal experiences to transform his paintings into “songs that can be seen.”
The new batch of works showcased in his solo exhibition also introduces more decorative geometric elements, such as the floor tiles in “22:22” and the patterned fabric and distant windows in “The Temporary Guest I.” These details not only highlight the finesse and beauty of the Chinese painting technique but also add layers to Lai’s work, inviting viewers to step into his tranquil world.
A talk between the artist, CUHK Associate Professor Zhou Jin and curator Agnes Wu will be held on 17 September at 15:00. The event will be conducted in Cantonese and Mandarin.
