Description

The Remains of Our Days marks the debut showcase at Alisan Atelier for local artists Amy Tang, Jeremy Ip and Rivian Cheung, and the gallery’s first collaboration with curator Joyce Wong Hei-ting. Inspired by Kazuo Ishiguro’s award-winning novel The Remains of the Day, this exhibition encourages us to reflect on what we leave behind and what will stay with us as we move forward in life.

Based in Kwu Tung, in the New Territories bordering Shenzhen, Tang’s abstract paintings are created in her father’s repurposed woodworks shed. Her work, including “Enclave I,” captures the tension between natural and human-made elements with layered brushstrokes embodying urban transformation.

For Ip, painting is his chosen medium to experience the world from different perspectives. He crafts ambiguous, meditative paintings like “They aren’t waiting” through complex layers of colour, inviting contemplation of impermanence and unnoticed details of life that often go unnoticed.

Trained in sculpture, Cheung experiments with technique and materials, as seen in “Trial Piece C60St90>C100St50,” using her own coding system based on elements such as colour, texture and time. For this exhibition, her bold new sculptures made from discarded furniture and plant fibres explore themes of time, loss and memory.
