Gulnur Mukazhanova’s Special Display of Central Asian Fabrics

Why We Recommend it

In Dowry of the Soul, Gulnur Mukazhanova presents her monumental installation “False Hope or Moment of the Present” and diverse artworks that explore Central Asian traditions and contemporary life.

Description

From mid-November onwards, Kazakh artist Gulnur Mukazhanova showcases her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Dowry of the Soul. The artist’s largest solo exhibition to date, it will showcase over 100 brightly coloured and meticulously crafted textile works that draw on Central Asian culture.

From 2 to 30 November, the first part of Mukazhanova’s exhibition will be displayed at The Hall of The Mills, featuring her monumental installation “False Hope or Moment of the Present.” This large-scale work spans three storeys and surrounds visitors with intricate cloud and floral felt patterns, where every vantage point will be a unique sensory experience.

A Kazakh contemporary artist, Mukazhanova cuts, deconstructs and reassembles traditional Central Asian textiles into colourful, suspended structures. Though the creation has been exhibited in Astana, Taipei and Dresden since 2018, the version presented with CHAT will be three times larger. Her work explores themes of cultural inheritance and female perspectives on tradition, using the dowry as a metaphor for hope, pain and identity. The exhibition encourages reflection on the soul of culture and what audiences choose to pass on.
