Why We Recommend it

The World of 2084 features two animated environmental films by interdisciplinary environmental artist Michelle Fung: Plastic, Plastic Everywhere! and Polluta, reflecting on the environmental crisis and human agency.

Description

Hand-illustrated by interdisciplinary environmental artist Michelle Fung, The World of 2084 comprises two animated environmental films, Plastic, plastic, every where! and Polluta, reimagining the future in 59 years.

The films revolve around an ecotopian space consisting of five imaginary countries (the G5, the Great Five Industrial Nations): Contradictoria, Northlandia, Dreamland, the Aristocratic Union and the Republic of Strata.

Plastic, Plastic Everywhere! (2018) serves as a prelude to The World of 2084. This dystopian cautionary tale on marine plastic pollution explores how a global obsession with plastic originates from an annual G5 meeting, prompting a protagonist to embark on a quest for a world without plastic. In Polluta (2023), Fung creates a utopian floating artist colony and narrates the story through the perspectives of a TV host and a flamboyant journalist. Various artists, inspired by the director’s friends, are featured throughout the film. At the end, select artist characters express their discontent with the “perfect” ecotopia and rebel against the colony’s ideals in the dark, desperate song titled “The Polluta Cadenza.”

Fung is an interdisciplinary environmental artist from Hong Kong and Canada. Her two animations have been shown locally and internationally in exhibitions and film festivals.
