NYPD Launch New Album Aboard Fantasy Cruise

Why We Recommend it

Beloved Hong Kong dance-punk agitators 南洋派對 NYPD launch a new album in typically absurdist style — hosting a fantasy cruise party aboard a landlocked boat.

Description

In the 17-year history of Clockenflap, no act has performed twice in less than 12 months – except 南洋派對 NYPD. After a barn-storming small-stage set in March 2023, the absurdist dance-punk group was invited onto a main stage in December 2023 — prompting a collective catharsis that must rank among the festival’s most spirited audience reactions. Here was a homegrown group that galvanised and united music fans with a potent mix of brazen guitars, propulsive beats, and especially, guttural yelled Cantonese lyrics exploring the mundanity of life in Hong Kong.

Most of those songs came from 2020’s self-titled debut (the name is an acronym for the Cantonese phrase naam4 jeong2 paai3 deoi3). Earlier this year, NYPD dropped a long-awaited second album symbolically on 22 February  – 22/2 – titled 我鍾意 and produced by their drummer Paul MacLean, also known as the recently appointed booking agent charged with changing direction at The Wanch. That LP is finally getting a launch party at the 1,500-capacity Tides – with a second night on 16 May newly added when the first on 15 May sold out.

Riffing on the venue’s nautical nature inside a grounded ship, the conceptual Nanyang Cruises are branded as a nostalgic fantasy inspired by collage holiday romance and promising a chaotic, euphoric party experience. The last part, at least, appears guaranteed.
